Life can not be solely defined by accumulation of wealth or achievement of self-motivated objectives. The full and true meaning of life can only be experienced by individuals when they finally realize that selflessness is the only thing that can make them happy.

Why Become a Volunteer for the American Diabetes Association? We’re not saying that being a volunteer for the American Diabetes Association will be more fulfilling than being a volunteer for another non-profit foundation. We’re merely suggesting that you join the American Diabetes Association if you’ve had loved ones suffering from diabetes, and you had felt helpless because you’re unable to make them feel better.

Also, if you have no preferences when it comes to what field or for what purpose would you like to be a volunteer in, you should then consider seriously joining the American Diabetes Association. Being a part of this organization will not only improve the quality of lives around you but yours as well.

A Brief History of the American Diabetes Association, The association’s mission-vision is simple: cure, care, and commitment. The ADA made a lifelong commitment to providing care to diabetic individuals and finding an effective and permanent cure for the disease. The ADA extends its assistance not only to people diagnosed with diabetes but also to the generous and caring individuals who have freely given their time and love to attend to people with diabetes.

Founded n 1940, the American Diabetes Association is the organization with the most significant contribution in diabetic research next to the U.S. government, having donated over $200M already throughout the years. Its presence has been widely established across the United States with over 800 communities.

It is extremely important for a diabetic to live by proper nutrition and healthy eating routine . Every member of the American Diabetes Association is encouraged to eat the ADA diet. The ADA diet plan is a guideline for members to eat healthy foods that contain just enough amounts of vitamins, proteins, carbohydrate and fat to help sustain them as diabetic patients. A diabetic patient should not over indulge in food or anything for that matter.

The ADA Diabetic diet guideline focuses on 4 major food groups.

1. Dairy products like low fat milk, skim milk, cottage cheese and yogurt are recommended for their calcium content, minerals and protein, too.
2. Foods such as poultry, meats, eggs, fish, nuts and dried beans.
3. Vegetables and fruits for vitamins and minerals necessary for repairs, and for carbohydrate foods
4. Whole grains, green breads and cereals are recommended.

If you follow the American Diabetes Association Diet plan your body will not lack the necessary nutrients for functioning normally, because your diet contains adequate vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats for a healthy life in spite of diabetes. In fact, this diet helps a great deal to control the disease.

Your car donation to the American Diabetes Association(ADA) can help to save lives. In this article, you will learn more about why vehicle donation to the ADA is a worthy cause and how the dollars from your car sold at auction can help to prevent suffering from this terrible disease.

Why Your Vehicle Donation Is Needed, Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans have diabetes related problems of all different varieties. Heart disease, strokes, the loss of the use of limbs and blindness can all be the side effects that individuals suffer that come out of having diabetes. People can lapse into diabetic comas, and can die in all sort of terrible ways, just from having a disease that is very frequently preventable and completely avoidable. And in a way, you and other people can stop this problem by making car donations to the ADA. You might be wondering how this is possible.

For one thing, by making car donations to the ADA, you facilitate research into ways to combat diabetes. The more we know about this terrible disease, the better we can nip it in the bud by discovering and treating it in the earliest stages. And beyond that, once diabetes has progressed to a level at which it becomes a serious health threat, its treatment can become downright costly. If we can stop diabetes from its roots, the problem can be averted and great health can be maintained.

How Your Vehicle Donation Supports the ADA, And you can actually help to fight this war (and yes, it is a war), just through car donations to the ADA. It really is pretty incredible how much you can do, just through giving your car to a charitable organization. Through auctioning off your car to someone who can use it to make their lives better, the ADA will take that money and use it for research and education campaigns. This, in turn, will potentially help a host of people who might later be diabetic to avoid that fate… or help to get necessary medical supplies and knowledge to those who already are. Your car can save lives!

There are other food pyramids which make other recommendations, such as the Harvard School of Public Health Food Pyramid which includes exercise on the bottom base layer.

The American Diabetes Association now has its own Diabetes Food Pyramid which helps diabetics plan a healthy diet.

Six Food Groups

There are six groups which make up the diabetes pyramid. These include grains and starches, vegetables, fruits, milk and dairy products, meat and meat substitutes and a final group consisting of fats, sweets, and alcohol. The most servings come from grains and starches and the fewest from fats, sweets and alcohol.

The diabetes pyramid suggests a range of servings. Obviously, you should choose the one which is most applicable to your calorie and diabetes nutrition goals. Calories can range from 1600 to 2000. As a rule of thumb, most women fall at the lower end of the calorie spectrum and most men at the higher end.

One of the differences between the Diabetes Food Pyramid and other nutritional pyramids is that foods are grouped together by their content of carbohydrates and proteins. Vegetables with high amounts of starches are listed in the grains and beans group instead of the vegetable group. Cheese becomes a meat and not a milk product. Plus, serving sizes vary too. For instance, the fruit juice serving is only a half cup and not three/fourths of a cup such as in other pyramids.

The American Diabetes Association diet recommends that you make healthy choices each time you eat. For those of us with diabetes, this is almost a no brainer. Eating healthy is one of the most important things we can do as diabetics to keep ourselves virile and complication free.

It is crucial that you see a nutritionist when you are diagnosed and get on a diabetic meal plan as soon as possible. It is also very important to choose foods with a low GI or Glycemic Index, and a high concentration of vitamins and minerals. The GI is a measure of how long it takes a certain food to raise your blood sugar, lower is always better.

Getting enough vitamins and minerals in the western world has become harder in recent decades due to the oversaturation of terrible, useless fast food that have taken over most of our diets. Some of the minerals and vitamins that are not present enough in the typical American diet are Fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins C,A, and E.

The following foods are considered “super foods” by the American Diabetes Association diet, and these foods can be safely integrated into your existing diabetic diet, or even if you are not a diabetic, these foods should be incorporated into your meal plan just for the sake of good health and longevity.

The following article on diabetes is appropriate for all, no matter what age.

Diabetes is a serious disease. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible.

Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This disease is a

condition where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood glucose levels, resulting

in too much glucose (a sugar) in the blood. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects as

many as 16 million Americans.

Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common

childhood diseases. Type 1 Diabetes is called Juvenile Diabetes as the onset of it begins in

childhood. Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases.

They concluded that most cases of type 2 diabetes is preventable by choosing a healthier

lifestyle. The problem, in a nutshell, is that type 2 diabetes is not a simple disease

caused by a single gene. The best way to control type 2 diabetes is with diet and exercise.

There has been a great deal of buzz about stem cell research and diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a life-long disease

marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Conditions associated with type 2 diabetes

include hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Type 2 diabetes may account for about 90% to 95% of

all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Up to two-thirds of people with type 2 diabetes have no

symptoms. Obesity is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes. An estimated

20% of all cases of new onset type 2 diabetes are in individuals between the ages of 9-19.

The more you know about type 2 diabetes, the more you’ll be able to take the right steps to

take control of your condition.

What is the relationship between insulin resistance and diabetes. Insulin resistance can

occur long before the onset of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is an important marker of

diabetes risk. You can counter insulin resistance through modest weight loss and exercise.

It is now generally accepted that insulin resistance and ß-cell dysfunction are major

factors involved in the development of diabetes. Some scientists think a defect in specific

genes may cause insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure,

and amputation in the United States. Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1

diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases. Type 2 diabetes is most common form

of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. Diabetes is a growing global problem of

devastating social and economic impact. But the startling truth is that diabetes is

reversible. The first step in managing diabetes is to commit yourself to the care of a

health professional.

Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a metabolism disorder taking place due to a combination of environmental and hereditary reasons. And the result of it is unusually high levels of sugar in the blood. The blood sugar levels in our bodies are balanced by an interaction of multiple chemicals and hormones, including the insulin hormone, which found in the pancreas. As a result of some defect in the action of insulin or problem in insulin secretion the blood sugar level increases. Hyperglycemia occurs that leads to the acute signs of diabetes like too much urine production, thirst and increased fluid intake, blurred vision, mysterious weight loss, lethargy and changes in energy metabolism.

The symptoms of diabetes occur gradually and are hard to identify initially. These may include a sick feeling, fatigue, excessive thirst and frequent urination, especially at night. Since the body has extra glucose in the blood, it tries to get rid of it through urine. This fluid loss leads to a feeling of thirst. Among the other symptoms are blurred vision, sudden weight loss, genital itching and slow healing of gum, skin and urinary tract infections. Since blood sugar is not something that one can see, the side effects are the signs that are considered by the doctors. Seeing the symptoms, the blood sugar level of the body is tested and accordingly, diabetes is diagnosed.

Doctors often suspect diabetes if the patient develops certain health problems that are related to diabetes. Heart disease, changes in vision, numbness in the feet and legs or slow-healing sores prompt a doctor to check for diabetes. These symptoms do not necessarily mean diabetes but anyone having any of these problems needs to consult a doctor as a preventive measure. Once the diabetes gets treated, the symptoms diminish.

Polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (excessive thirst) and polyphagia (hunger and weight loss) are the classic symptoms of diabetes. A dry mouth, aches and pains, fatigue, unusual infections, blurred vision, dry skin and slow healing of wounds are the other signs. But one needs to remember that not everybody will show all of these symptoms. It is better to test one’s blood sugar level if any one of these symptoms occurs. Sometimes, there can be absolutely no symptoms and yet, one can have diabetes.

In diabetes type 1, the pancreas stops producing insulin due to some viral attack or autoimmune response. In the absence of insulin, body cells don’t get the required amount of glucose for producing Adenosin Triphosphate or ATP units. This results in the symptom of nausea and vomiting. Gradually, the body starts breaking down the muscle tissue and fat for producing energy leading to weight loss. Due to electrolyte disturbance dehydration can also occur. Advanced stages of diabetes can lead to coma and death.

In case of diabetes type 2, the body builds up a resistance to insulin. Due to the failure of the cells to metabolise glucose, fat deposited in the body is metabolised to gain energy. The body undergoes negative calorie effect and feels fatigue. When the glucose concentration in the blood rise, the brain receives signal for diluting it. Hyperosmolar hyperglycemia nonketotic syndrome results as body fluid is pulled out of tissues together with eye lenses.

Knowing the symptoms of diabetes can save your life. As you must know, diabetes is considered a chronic disease that can worsen over time if left uncontrolled.

Unfortunately, many people don’t know they have diabetes until the disease has already progressed. This is because the symptoms of diabetes can easily be mistaken for something else, or they may appear as harmless you wouldn’t really suspect they already indicate something serious.

It therefore always helps to understand the symptoms of diabetes so you can consult a diabetologist or an endocrinologist to assess your case and recommend the essential diabetes treatment. The sooner you do this, the sooner you will get treatment, the lesser the chance of having diabetic complications.

So what exactly are these symptoms of diabetes that you have to watch out for?

Frequency of urination – this is actually one of the classic symptoms of diabetes. It happens because with diabetes, there is an inability to break down glucose in the blood, thus there is no other way for the excess glucose to go to but out of the body through urination.

Excessive thirst and dehydration – because of the frequency of urination, excessive thirst and sometimes even dehydration normally follow.

Over-fatigue – this usually occurs because the glucose that is supposed to provide nutrition to the cells does not go to the cells but pools in blood and eventually out of the body, thereby starving the cells, the reason why diabetics often experience over-fatigue.

Weight loss – this is expected since glucose is not able to provide the cells with the essential nutrients, but is excreted out of the body.

Other signs and symptoms of diabetes include:

Blurred vision Dry mouth Dry or itchy skin

The moment you experience these symptoms of diabetes, do not waste time but see your doctor at once. He may recommend that you undergo certain laboratory tests to establish the presence of diabetes.

The Diabetes Treatment

As of now, diabetes has no cure. Considered a chronic disease, it can only be controlled so as to prevent the likelihood of complications such as blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, and so on. In certain cases where leg wounds do not heal at all, amputation of the affected leg may be done. Because of the seriousness of such complications, it is important to take the necessary measures to regulate blood sugar levels, and this can be done through:

diet exercise medications

Diabetics are advised to strictly adhere to this diabetic treatment regimen to effectively control diabetes. They are further encouraged to constantly monitor their blood sugar levels. Sometimes it can be a good thing to invest in a gadget that measures blood sugar levels so you don’t have to go to the lab anymore.

Make regular trips to your diabetologist so he can see how well you are coping with the treatment plan. Depending on your response to the treatment, he may change, reduce, or add your medications.

Certain herbs and spices are said to regulate blood sugar levels. Nonetheless it is always wise to consult with your doctor first before trying any alternative therapy.

Even if you do not have diabetes now, just have routine checkups with your doctor, and observe yourself closely for the presence of some symptoms of diabetes.

During digestion, the body releases a number of hormones and chemicals to deal with the food. Everything eaten is converted to blood glucose and then burned immediately for energy, converted to glycogen, and stored in the muscles to be burned later or converted to fat for longer term storage in the body. One of the major components of the digestive process is the release of insulin, which decides how much of the food is burned and how much is stored. The higher the level of blood sugar in the body, the more insulin is released and the more that fat storage will occur. In diabetes, the pancreas does not release enough insulin and the body is not as able to deal with the blood sugar.

Diagnosis of diabetes is done by a simple blood test; however, there is another blood test that may suggest its possibility. The A1C test, recommended by the American Diabetes Association, measures how well blood glucose has been controlled in the previous three months and can define a person who is at high risk of developing diabetes (pre-diabetic) as well as those who are actually diabetic. Testing should be done starting at age 45 for the average adult but should be done sooner for those who are deemed at high risk for developing the disease. The risk factors for diabetes include those who are more than 20% over their ideal weight, those who have hypertension, high cholesterol or a family history of diabetes, being a member of certain ethic groups including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, and women who have had gestational diabetes or have had a baby that weighed more than nine pounds. (Source: Ammer, 2005)

Diabetes can lead to several additional diseases and conditions as well as making other conditions more serious and difficult to manage. Diabetes can cause vision problems up to and including blindness and is one of the leading reasons for amputation in the United States. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke and plays a major role in kidney disease.

There are three types of diabetes: Type I or juvenile diabetes, usually detected in childhood and affecting about 10% of all diabetics (Source: Ammer, 2005), Type II diabetes, which was once thought to be a disease only seen in adults but is now being seen in children and young teens. 90% of the people with Type II diabetes are obese. The third type of diabetes is gestational pregnancy diabetes, which typically disappears after the baby’s delivery; however, this is not always the case. It is believed that gestational diabetes is more serious than just another symptom or extension of pregnancy and that is a development of a disease that is already in place.

Because diabetes is so prevalent and has the potential for so many serious consequences, it is important that the warning signs be heeded and testing completed. An estimated 14 million Americans have diabetes and it is the third leading cause of death in this country. (Source: MacLean 1993)

The warning signs of diabetes:

- Increased thirst

- Frequent urination, especially at night

- Constant hunger

- Blurred vision

- Unusual fatigue

- Sores that do not heal

- Unexplained weight loss

- Menstrual irregularity and chronic yeast infections

Dietary Guidelines

Because most people who already have or are at an increased risk of developing diabetes are obese, it is important that a balanced diet be adopted to help them reduce body fat. In many cases, diabetes can be controlled through diet alone, however, many will need medications and many others will eventually need to have insulin injections. Some may have insulin pumps inserted in their abdomen instead of doing injections. Even a small reduction in weight can change the amount of medication that is needed for the average person. Because diabetes is often linked to heart disease, the American Heart Association heart healthy diet or DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is often suggested. The DASH diet plan includes a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products but limited amounts of red meats and sugars. Sodium is limited with this diet as well.

Every diet should include the three macronutrients, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Diabetics, as well as people who have heart or kidney disease, should not get excessive protein in their diets, with the American Heart Association suggesting 35% as the upper limit. The diet should be 50% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 20% fats, however, for better weight loss the numbers for protein and fat should be changed slightly, making it 35% protein and only 15% fat. (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) This slightly increased protein amount is still within the safe range set by the AHA but allows for higher satiety scores. It does not affect the hunger hormones ghrelin or leptin at this level.

Protein is vital to every part of the body and plays a role in every cell and function. In a reduced-calorie diet, it might be necessary to supplement protein and other nutrients for optimal functioning, but diabetics must be careful to choose the right supplement for them. The doctor that is helping to manage your disease will have suggestions, however, there are two that might be worth investigating as well: whey protein and a liquid protein supplement called Profect.

Whey protein has a number of benefits related to blood sugar and blood sugar regulation. First, it helps to maintain an even blood sugar level after a meal and helps to promote healthy insulin secretion. It also helps insulin to work better as well. Whey protein is the highest natural food source of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are important to weight loss. A BCAA is unique in that it is metabolized straight to muscle tissue rather than being converted first to glycogen and then back to glucose for energy. The muscles will burn these amino acids first during intense exercise or resistance training. Whey is also a good source of the amino acid leucine, which promotes muscle growth. Muscles burn more energy simply because they need more energy – the more muscle that you have, the more energy you will burn to maintain it. Whey also suppresses the appetite by stimulating the release of CCK and GLP-1. Whey is not appropriate for those who are lactose intolerant.

Profect also stabilizes blood sugar after a meal, making it a perfect between-meal snack. It can also be consumed before a meal so that the blood glucose level remains stable and there is less fat storage. It is only 100 calories and has zero carbohydrates and zero fats but a full 25 grams of highly digestible protein per serving. Each serving is less than three fluid ounces in size and can be consumed in seconds. Profect supplies all of the day’s vitamin C as well as half of the day’s B complex vitamins. Flavors of Profect include Blue Raspberry, Grapefruit-Mango, Fresh Citrus Berry, and Cool Melon Splash.
